It originally opened as the ill-fated Tinseltown, an awards show-themed restaurant. After converting to a concert venue, it was renamed The Sun Theatre for a short time before changing its name to The Grove of Anaheim. On January 24, 2011, the venue again changed its name to City National Grove of Anaheim, following the agreement of a five-year, $1.25 million naming rights deal with City National Bank.

A list of the bands that have played here are Thursday, Panic! at the Disco, Cobra Starship, 3OH!3, Travie McCoy and the Lazarus Project, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Lamb of God, Tech N9ne, Kottonmouth Kings, Insane Clown Posse, Bullet for My Valentine, The Fab Four, Marilyn Manson, Puddle of Mudd, Paramore and more. Comedians such as Ron White, Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall have also performed at the Grove.
