The Famous Clothing Store St. Louis, Missouri
was a division of The May Company. It was established in 1892. In 1905 Famous became May's hometown division when they relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. May's purchse of The William Barr Dry Goods Company; lead the company to merge the Dry Goods Company with Famous. In 1911 The Famous Clothing Store and William Barr Dry Goods Company deal was complete. May renamed the merged divisions as The Famous-Barr Company later shortened to Famous-Barr. In 1991 Famous-Barr merged with L.S Ayres & Company and in 1998 The Jones Store Company (both retained their names but shuttered their flagships).On August 30, 2005 Federated Department Stores purchased May Company adding its stores to The Macy's Family. On February 1, 2006 The St. Louis Centre was sold off to Federated making a new Macy's Midwest division. On September 9, 2006 Famous's nameplate was ended when Famous-Barr was converted to Macy's
