The Armthorpe School is an 11-18 comprehensive school of approximately 770 students which serves the former mining village of Armthorpe, situated three miles to the east of Doncaster and five minutes from Junction 4 of the M18. The school benefits from its location at the heart of a well-established and cohesive community. There is strong sense of goodwill and support from parent / carers which are founded principally upon recognition of our student centred ethos and high aspirations for all learners.

Secondly, The Armthorpe School is committed to raising the confidence, self-esteem and attainment of our students through learning experiences which allow for active participation and an appropriate degree of challenge. The school’s values make clear our expectation that all school members exhibit ambition, mutual respect, willingness to take responsibility, and pride in belonging. These values are a reference point for all aspects of school life, but particularly our work, relationships, behaviour and attitudes.

The schools status on becoming an academy will be decided on 10th October 2011. This will decide if the school stays as a school or will turn into an academy. A school letter was sent out to all pupils before end of term in July 2011 stating: "The Armthorpe School Governing Body has passed a unanimous resolution to enter into formal consultation regarding conversion to Academy status with Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College, Wakefield, as sponsor."

From September 2011, all students who has a normal tie is required to trade it in for a clip-on tie which must be worn at all times. Also from September 2011, there will be many changes around the staff.
