Altman began his political career as a Brevard County Commissioner where he served from 1985 to 1992. He also served in the Regional Planning Council in 1986, 1987 and 1992.

During a Special Election in 2003, Altman was voted into the Florida House of Representatives

A Brevard County resident and contractor, Altman currently serves on the following committees: Regulated Industries; Health Regulation; Communications, Energy, and Public Utilities; Budget subcommittees on Higher Education Appropriations and Finance & Tax [Vice Chair]; and he is the Chairman of the Military Affairs, Space, and Domestic Security. Altman also serves on the Space Florida Board of Directors, the Florida Council on Military Base and Mission Support, the Children with Developmental Disabilities Task Force, Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission and Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

As a State Representative, Altman received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Brevard Community College. In 2003, he served on the Community Advisory Board at Rollins College, on the Finance Committee for St. Mary’s Catholic School and as President of the American Lung Association.

Altman lives with his wife Mary Pat, and three children McKenzie, Hunter and Sullivan in Rockledge.
