The center was governed by the Tennessee Department of Education until 1983 when control was transferred to the Tennessee Board of Regents by House Bill 697 and Senate Bill 746.

The first of its kind to be constructed, the Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville, opened its doors on November 30, 1964, for full-time preparatory programs with forty-one students enrolled in six programs (Air Conditioning/Refrigeration, Auto Mechanics, Drafting, Industrial Electricity, Machine Shop and Welding).

TTC Shelbyville Technical Blog, Web 2.0 and Cloud Services

The Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville began a technical blog in September 2007 to supplement programs and focus on new technologies. TTC Shelbyville's Blog Readership grew to over 550,000 by early 2011 and has a global following.

In 2010 the information technology department implemented the Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville Learning Management System. This LMS Cloud array is used to supplement classes with Moodle

Beginning August 2011, TTC Shelbyville became the first technology center to offer Allied Health Testing online through their on campus LMS cloud servers.

Building Expansions

In 1981 the school was expanded to give more space for existing programs. In July 1994, the name was changed by the Tennessee Legislature to "Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville".

Another expansion in 1996 with the addition of approximately 17700 square feet (1,644.4 m²) and renovation to the existing building.

The expansion brought the total square footage of the center to approximately 61250 square feet (5,690.3 m²). Also included in the expansion was money for the upgrade of equipment in all program and classroom areas.

Renovations in 2008–2009 included monies to update classrooms with state-of-the-art equipment and to renovate the lobby and all hallways.

Plans are to expand the school to include a building on the southern portion of the school's grounds by 2015.

The Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville is accredited by the Council of Occupational Education (COE). The Council on Occupational Education (COE), is a regional accrediting agency of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

August 2001 - Steve Mallard, CIT Instructor was awarded the Outstanding Faculty of the Year for the Tennessee Technology Centers.

March 2004 - Steve Mallard, CIT Instructor was awarded the 2004 Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award. The Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award

April 2010 - The Machine Tool Technology program under instructor Ken Potts was recognized as the American Technical Educator's Association Program of the Year ATEA Program of the Year 2010

November 2010 - The Machine Tool Technology program was recognized by PMA (Precision Metalforming Association). The 2010 Clips & Clamps Industries Educational Institution Award recognized the program for its outstanding curriculum.

December 2010 - Dr. Gwen Bean received the 2010 TBEA (The Tennessee Business Education Association) Post-secondary Business Teacher of the Year.

June 2011 - The Computer Information Technology program under lead instructor Steve Mallard was recognized as a 2011 Computerworld Laureate. Computerworld Honors Program
