Nicknamed "The Pitching Professor," Ted Lewis was one of only three Welsh-born players to break into major league baseball

). He was 23 years old when he debuted on July 6, 1896, with the Boston Beaneaters. After the 1901 season, he retired from baseball to teach full-time at Columbia University
and later at Williams College
. He became a prominent educator, eventually serving as president of Massachusetts State College

from 1927 until his death in Durham
