In June 1996, he became a member of the Deve Gowda cabinet on
the recommendation of Laloo Yadav. However, public anger in Bihar had forced an embarrassed Deve Gowda to prevail upon him to resign in the very next month.

Despite the Manmohan Singh government aspiring
to a higher ethical standard, he was appointed Minister of State for the potentially lucrative
Public Distribution ministry in May 2004.
Unlike in 1996, there did not appear to have been much
protest.
