Tambacan is one of the 44 barangays of Iligan City
Iligan City
The City of Iligan is a highly urbanized industrial city north of the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines, and the province's former capital. It is approximately 795 kilometers southeast of Manila...

. It is near the vicinity of Iligan's central business district, Barangay Poblacion. It is bounded by Barangay Poblacion and Tubod River to the north, Iligan Bay to west, Barangay Mahayahay and Tubod River to the east, and bounded by Barangay Tubod to the south and south west.

Barangay Tambacan was created on September 5, 1966. It has total land area of about 48.1 hectares and is subdivided into 12 Puroks.
Currently, Barangay Tambacan has a population of 13,906 as of Aug 1, 2007.

Accessible from the north through Barangay Poblacion by the Tambacan Bridge and from the south through Tubod by the Tambacan Highway, Barangay Tambacan is becoming one of the major bypassing network for Iligan's trunk line for land transport as its highway diverts and helps ease traffic from the city's major thoroughfares. Fishing is the major source of living for most of the constituents of Barangay Tambacan. Not only because of its proximity to Iligan Bay but partly because Iligan's major dropping point for fish trades from the major fish ports in Mindanao is located at one of its puroks. Proximity of the location for fish wholesale has become an advantage for its local fish traders who are one of the majority of the fish traders of Iligan's two major market places which are The Pala-o Supermaket and Iligan's Wet Market (formerly Old Public Market).

Tambacan has educational institutions that cater to the learning needs of its education. The Iligan City National High School - Tambacan Campus or commonly called ICNHS Annex (Tambacan) has become a major learning sector in the barangay given the proximity of its location. At present, the school is already serving the complete high school curriculum for the learning needs not only for Tambacan but to nearby southern barangays of Iligan City. The school is positioned to separate from the ICNHS school system with its bid recently to become an independent nationalized high school with a bill to be passed in congress.

Another institution that caters for primary learning needs of the barangay is Tambacan Elementary School. At present, the primary school already serves complete elementary level education from grade 1 to grade 6.
