. Tallwood was built on the site of an old colonial plantation whose manor house was Tallwood, hence the name of the school. Tallwood was remodeled during 2004-2005.

Academic honors

Tallwood's Policy Debate team won the VHSL State Championships for AAA Classical Debate in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004.

Sports

In 2005, Tallwood's Boys Volleyball Team has been named Beach District Champion 7 out of the past 8 years with a State Championship in 2004. Regional champions 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005. All-State honors: Brendan Rooney, Ty Forehand, Daniel Bowery, Josh Walker, Joel McElhannon, Justin Hales, Josh Mallory, Jason Munoz, Alex Brownley. The team also featured other standouts such as; Michael Tomlin, Robert Miner, Matthew Beasley, Chris Mendoza, and Mark Renosa. The Boys Volleyball team is also accredited for beginning the infamous "Beach Boyz" Volleyball Club.

In 2006, Tallwood's Boys Basketball team became the Beach Regular Season Champion, Eastern Region Champions, as well as becoming State Semifinalist. In 2007 the team repeated as the Regular Season Beach District champs.

In 1998 the Tallwood Football team went 12-1 and won the District and Regional Championship. They ended up losing to Varina High School in the State semi-finals. One of the key members of the 1998 Tallwood Football Team was Marques Hampton. Hampton and his mother lost their lives while driving back from the Virginia Tech new student orientation. Virginia Tech has set up a scholarship in memory of Marques.

Johnathan Dunn joined the NFL in 2005, and currently is a free agent. in the summer of 2010, John came back to coach Tallwood
