The school is named after human rights activist Tai Solarin

Augustus Taiwo "Tai" Solarin was a Nigerian educator and author. He established the famous Mayflower School, Ikenne, Ogun State in 1956....

 (1922–1994). It is the second university approved in Ogun State, and the 76th approved university in Nigeria. The current vice chancellor, Professor Awonusi, resumed duties in April 2010.

It was proclaimed a full-fledged university by the former governor of Ogun state, His Excellency Otunba Gbenga Daniel on 29 January 2005. The former Tai Solarin College of Education was approved by the Nigerian Universities Commission

. Dr. Philips Olasunkanmi Tella and Yinusa Oyeneye, its pro chancellors, were formerly the chairmen of the board of governing council.

It has four colleges: the College of Education and Applied Vocational and Technical Study (the school's largest faculty) COAEVOT, the College of Social and Management Studies COSIT, the College of Humanities COHUM, and the College of Science and Information Technology COSIT.

Campus

The school has halls and auditoriums such as the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Auditorium, university (e-learning) block, Alex O. Onabanjo Complex, CEPEP building, the Science Complex, and the Lecture Theatre.

The school is building its infrastructure. This includes the two-storey electronic library, Kessingnton Adebutu building for technical and vocational studies which have both been completed. The university has no hostels for students; the hostels available are built by the residents of the local communities.
Students of this school leave in local communities such as Ijagun, Ijele, Imaweje and Ijebu Ode.
