The popularity of Tahko is a consequence of both good location and a rapid and forceful development and diversifying of activities. Tahko is called a small tourist town with its many restaurants and possibilities for various outdoor activities. It has some of the best winter sports facilities in Finland. Snowmobile enthusiasts also appreciate the marked routes covering hundreds of kilometers in Nilsiä and Northeast Savonia

In summer there are numerous marked paths for hiking and mountain biking. Nilsiä has a well-equipped marina and there is excellent fishing in lakes Syväri

There are also a wide range of sports services and special clubs for people of many different ages. A modern sports field, two full-length golf courses, sports hall, tennis courts and other sports premises offer excellent possibilities for both training and fun.

In the neighborhood there is an old place for strip mining. Today this is used for opera performances.

The idea of artificially increasing the height of Tahkovuori has awoken much debate in Finland.
