Notable Stories

In June of 2009, Tablet’s podcast, Vox Tablet, ran a piece by reporter Eric Molinsky, about the unknown history of the Jewish actresses who were Bollywood’s biggest stars in the 1920s and 1930s. The piece was one of three that won Tablet its first National Magazine Award.

In December of 2009, Tablet introduced an original Hannukah song penned by Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah. The song came about as a result of a conversation between Hatch and Goldberg, who complained about the dearth of Jewish holiday tunes. An amateur lyricist, the senator took up the challenge and produced the still-popular song.

In April of 2010, Tablet’s blogger, Marc Tracy, wrote a humorous post arguing the cookie dough ought to be kosher for Passover, as it, too, is unleavened. The post was one of several that won Tablet its second National Magazine Award.

In December of 2010, a satirical cartoon by playwright David Mamet about the Jewish tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas became an Internet phenomenon.

In February of 2011, in its Torah commentary column, Tablet broke news of the existence of Premiere on Call, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications that provides radio talk shows with actors pretending to be real callers. The story led to outraged reactions from notable pundits like Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, and Keith Olbermann.

In July of 2011, Tablet columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote a widely read analysis of the tense relations between Jewish voters and the Republican Party, increasingly dominated by evangelical Christians.

In September of 2011, Judith Miller became the first American journalist to interview Yitzhak Levanon, Israel’s ambassador to Egypt, following the attack on the Israeli embassy in Cairo.
