As is the case with the vast majority of heavy metal bands with acronym-based names, there appears to have been no actual meaning behind TSA's name, although in a 2003 press release one of the founders claimed that the acronym originally meant "Tajne Stowarzyszenie Abstynentow", i.e. "“Teetotallers' Secret Association” or "Teetotallers' Anonymous."

 as an initiative of guitarist Andrzej Nowak. The original line - up included also Stefan Machel

 (guitar), Janusz Niekrasz (bass) and Marek Kapłon (drums). TSA at first had no singer and was an instrumental band. That fact didn't prevent the band from winning "a battle of the bands" during the 1981 Jarocin Festival

. During the festival the members of the band meet Marek Piekarczyk, a singer in Sektor A. He decided to join TSA as the band's vocalist. He debuted in the new role after a month, at the Pop Session festival in Sopot

TSA's song, "Zwierzenia kontestatora" ("Confessions Of A Contestant") is used in a musical documentary "Behind the Iron Curtain", which documents the first visit of the heavy metal band, Iron Maiden

TSA's song "Marsz wilków" ("The Marching Of The Wolves") is used in a polish 1983 children's movie "Akademia Pana Kleksa" ("Academy of Mr. Kleks").

In spring 2001, after a period of disintegration at the eve of the 1990s, the band was re-activated in 'classical line-up' to continue to record and perform.
