TCM, Turner Classic Movies, is a television channel broadcasting "classic" films from the 1940s to the 1990s (mostly from the Warner Bros.
and pre-May 1986 MGM film libraries) to Sweden
, Denmark
, Finland
and Norway
. The channel uses English audio with subtitles in Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Norwegian. The channel is commercial-free and films are not interrupted.
The channel has its origin in TNT which was broadcast on the same frequency as Cartoon Network
. With the launch of digital television in 1998, the two channels have been allowed to operate two separate 24-hour schedules. The combined version does however still continue on some analogue cable networks. In October 1999, the channel changed its name from TNT Classic Movies to Turner Classic Movies, or TCM for short. In early 2009, the channel adopted a new logo and a new look.
In late 1996, TNT and Cartoon Network launched on Intelsat 707 and became a part of the analogue CTV
package. The analogue broadcast ended in 2001. The channel has been a part of the Canal Digital
satellite package since 1997. Their competitor Viasat
added TCM and Cartoon Network as a shared channel on September 23, 2005.
TCM was allowed to broadcast in the Swedish digital terrestrial network
in June 2004. In addition it is also available through many cable networks.
