TR Zeliang is one of the strongest politician among the Nagas in general and zeliangrongs in particular. He was the sitting MLA of tenning constituency(Peren district) before he was the congress MP from Nagaland. He later changed party and joined NPF and was elected from peren constituency after defeating Vatsu mero. He was given a cabinet beth in Nephio Rio led NPF government and was put in charge of planning. He is believed to be the power behind the scene. He had played a major role in the creation of present Peren district which is basically inhibited by Zeliang and Kuki tribes. He had brought much development to the said district including road links to Assam, NC hills and Manipur, Tamenlong. It maybe noted that while the zeliangrongs, the tribe to which he belongs, are quite satisfied with his performance, the Kukis who are the minor tribe of the Peren distinct inhibiting the Athibung area are far from happy with the cancellation of Border magistrate post at Khelma after the state government has given the approval for the creation of the said post. The indigenous Kukis of Nagaland, who had been neglected from the past as they are not Nagas and after bearing the heat of Kuki naga conflict of the 1990s now are again a mute spectators to his exhibition of power politics, with disgust in their heart for TR Zeliang as he had openly opposed the creation of Border magistrate at Khelma (Kuki) and is using his political clout to shut the post to Inkeo (Zeliang) village. Moreover many NEC sponsored road link blue prints are modified to let the Zeliang villages benefit the most at the cost of Kuki villages being neglected. The bottom line is that TR Zeliang is a smart politician on tribal-line and is not definitely a statesman in the making.
