Surrey Canal Road station

Surrey Canal Road railway station is a proposed station on the East London Line
of the London Overground
network. It would be on the spur from which is to carry the East London Line phase 2 extension along the Inner South London Line to . The site is adjacent to Millwall Football Club's ground The Den
. It was announced on 16 February 2009 that the line would be built but that funding for Surrey Canal Road station might not be available.
On 5 August 2009 the local MP, Joan Ruddock
, asked local residents to campaign for the station to be built contemporaneously with the line rather than later. A website about the proposed station was launched.
Lewisham Council agreed in principle on 26 January 2010 to provide the missing funding to complete Surrey Canal Road station. Transport for London
is committed to building the foundations for the station building and platforms to enable construction to take place readily should funding be found. On the 3 September 2010 the Department for Transport
refused to provide £7 million for building the station as it would not provide good value for money.
A large £850m development around The Den
has been approved - with Renewal, a developer, agreeing to fund a new station. Lewisham Council’s strategic planning committee resolved to grant developer Renewal's applcation at a meeting on 13 October 2011. The planning application will now be referred to the Mayor of London to secure his approval. If the application is approved, then the station will be built. This means that the area north and south of Surrey Canal Road in Bermondsey (near New Cross) could be transformed. The new development will include shops, cafes and restaurants, business space and new leisure and sports facilities along with up to 2,400 new homes.
