) or Scuola Superiore Universitaria are recognized by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (Italy)(MIUR) as fully autonomous and there are three Superior Graduate Schools with 'university status', three institutes with the status of Doctoral Colleges, which function at graduate and post-graduate level. Another nine other schools are direct offshoot of the universities (i.e. do not have their own 'university status').

These institutions are commonly referred as "Schools of Excellence" i.e. "Scuole di Eccellenza"
