Superficial temporal artery
Encyclopedia
In human anatomy
, the superficial temporal artery is a major artery
of the head
. It arises from the external carotid artery
when it bifurcates into the superficial temporal artery and maxillary artery.
Its pulse
is palpable
superior to the zygomatic arch
, anterior and superior to the tragus.
It begins in the substance of the parotid gland
, behind the neck of the mandible, and passes superficially over the posterior root of the zygomatic process
of the temporal bone
; about 5 cm. above this process it divides into two branches, a frontal
and a parietal

and one or two veins, and is accompanied by the auriculotemporal nerve
, which lies immediately behind it.
The superficial temporal artery anastomoses with (among others) the supraorbital artery of the internal carotid artery
.

Migraine
attacks occur when the temporal artery enlarges.
Human anatomy
Human anatomy is primarily the scientific study of the morphology of the human body. Anatomy is subdivided into gross anatomy and microscopic anatomy. Gross anatomy is the study of anatomical structures that can be seen by the naked eye...
, the superficial temporal artery is a major artery
Artery
Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. This blood is normally oxygenated, exceptions made for the pulmonary and umbilical arteries....
of the head
Head
In anatomy, the head of an animal is the rostral part that usually comprises the brain, eyes, ears, nose and mouth . Some very simple animals may not have a head, but many bilaterally symmetric forms do....
. It arises from the external carotid artery
External carotid artery
In human anatomy, the external carotid artery is a major artery of the head and neck. It arises from the common carotid artery when it bifurcates into the external and internal carotid artery.-Course:...
when it bifurcates into the superficial temporal artery and maxillary artery.
Its pulse
Pulse
In medicine, one's pulse represents the tactile arterial palpation of the heartbeat by trained fingertips. The pulse may be palpated in any place that allows an artery to be compressed against a bone, such as at the neck , at the wrist , behind the knee , on the inside of the elbow , and near the...
is palpable
Palpation
Palpation is used as part of a physical examination in which an object is felt to determine its size, shape, firmness, or location...
superior to the zygomatic arch
Zygomatic arch
The zygomatic arch or cheek bone is formed by the zygomatic process of temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygomatic bone , the two being united by an oblique suture; the tendon of the Temporalis passes medial to the arch to gain insertion into the coronoid process...
, anterior and superior to the tragus.
Course
The superficial temporal artery is the smaller of two terminal branches that bifurcate superiorly from the external carotid. Based on its direction, the superficial temporal artery appears to be a continuation of the external carotid. It begins in the substance of the parotid gland
Parotid gland
The paired parotid glands are the largest of the salivary glands. They are each found wrapped around the mandibular ramus, and secrete saliva through Stensen's ducts into the oral cavity, to facilitate mastication and swallowing and to begin the digestion of starches.-Location:The parotid glands...
, behind the neck of the mandible, and passes superficially over the posterior root of the zygomatic process
Zygomatic process of temporal bone
The zygomatic process of the temporal bone is a long, arched process projecting from the lower part of the squamous portion of the temporal bone...
of the temporal bone
Temporal bone
The temporal bones are situated at the sides and base of the skull, and lateral to the temporal lobes of the cerebrum. The temporal bone supports that part of the face known as the temple.-Parts:The temporal bone consists of four parts:* Squama temporalis...
; about 5 cm. above this process it divides into two branches, a frontal
Frontal branch of superficial temporal artery
The frontal branch of superficial temporal artery runs tortuously upward and forward to the forehead, supplying the muscles, integument, and pericranium in this region, and anastomosing with the supraorbital and frontal arteries....
and a parietal
Parietal branch of superficial temporal artery
The parietal branch of superficial temporal artery , larger than the frontal, curves upward and backward on the side of the head, lying superficial to the temporal fascia, and anastomosing with its fellow of the opposite side, and with the posterior auricular and occipital arteries....
.
Relations
As it crosses the zygomatic process, it is covered by the Auricularis anterior muscle, and by a dense fascia; it is crossed by the temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerveFacial nerve
The facial nerve is the seventh of twelve paired cranial nerves. It emerges from the brainstem between the pons and the medulla, and controls the muscles of facial expression, and functions in the conveyance of taste sensations from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue and oral cavity...
and one or two veins, and is accompanied by the auriculotemporal nerve
Auriculotemporal nerve
The auriculotemporal nerve is a branch of the mandibular nerve that runs with the superficial temporal artery and vein, and provides sensory innervation to various regions on the side of the head.-Origin:...
, which lies immediately behind it.
The superficial temporal artery anastomoses with (among others) the supraorbital artery of the internal carotid artery
Internal carotid artery
In human anatomy, the internal carotid arteries are two major arteries, one on each side of the head and neck. They arise from the common carotid arteries where these bifurcate into the internal and external carotid artery, and they supply the brain....
.
Clinical relevance
The superficial temporal artery is often affected in temporal arteritisTemporal arteritis
Giant-cell arteritis or Horton disease is an inflammatory disease of blood vessels most commonly involving large and medium arteries of the head...
and biopsied
Biopsy
A biopsy is a medical test involving sampling of cells or tissues for examination. It is the medical removal of tissue from a living subject to determine the presence or extent of a disease. The tissue is generally examined under a microscope by a pathologist, and can also be analyzed chemically...
