Sunny Johnson died from a burst blood vessel in her brain, she had suffered on the night of June 18, 1984. The actress was found unconscious by her boyfriend, Archie Hahn, in the home they shared.

Without any hope of her mental recovery, her family agreed to take her off the respirator. Sunny Johnson died at the age of only 30 years, without regaining consciousness.
