The day itself is celebrated mostly in the USA near the spring equinox, however it is actually a year-long educational event with a different theme each year. Each year's theme is supported by free educational plans for both informal and formal educators.

In 2011, Sun-Earth Day occurred on March 19, with the theme Ancient Mysteries; Future Discoveries. In addition to those celebrations at Goddard Space Flight Center
