Sudeten Creche was formed in 1981 as a semi Warholian experiment by the music business svengali Yvette Döll. The first line up featured Paul Carlin and Mark Warner who wrote the classic minimal electronic tracks “Are Kisses out of Fashion?” and “Dance” featured on their first release called “Europe in the Year Zero”. This EP also included the Yazoo
track “Goodbye ‘70’s” and is the first official release by Yazoo
and preceded their Album Upstairs at Eric's
. Also featured on the EP were Colour Me Pop, formerly known as Watch with Mother. The line up included Michael White (author)
, Jan Cousins, Martin Jago and Colin McGlone. Michael White (author)
and Jan Cousins later joined and toured with the Thompson Twins
.
Sudeten Creche’s second release was the EP “Kindergarten” in 1983 through Illuminated Records. It included the tracks “Kindergarten”, “Dance” (Instrumental and extended mix) and “Asylums in Beirut”.
By the end of 1983 Mark Warner was pursuing other projects including “The Firm”, "The Virgin Brides", “World Gone Mad”, "Miles from Luton", "Three Fidlers Not" and "Tokyo Rose". Mark Warner is also the principal person behind Rossetti's Compass. Baz Voce joined Sudeten Creche in 1983/1984 and toured supporting Nico
on her final UK tour.
During the 1980s Paul Carlin produced a number of projects including work for Razzmatazz (Bucks Fizz (band)
's management company).
In an interview for Veronica Vasicka
for Minimal Wave
and East Village Radio
in New York, Paul Carlin wrote that Sudeten Creche never really finished, but we just did other projects as well. Mark and Paul worked on Sudeten Creche many times during the 1980s and up to 1991.
In 2005, after being abroad for many years, Paul and Mark found themselves in the UK again at the same time so they continued with Sudeten Creche which lead to the Annalogue Records single “Wounds” in 2008, Minimal Waves re-release of the tracks from the first two to EP’s in 2009 called "Are Kisses out of Fashion?" followed by and EP CD “A kiss from the Creche” in December 2009.
Robbie Georghegan of Igloo Magazine has reviewed the 'Are kisses out of fashion?' EP and also the 'A kiss from the Creche' CD-EP..." and remarks that "...It is undeniable that new wave is back, or minimal wave as it is now being dubbed; the lines between the two seem almost non existent. In fact, the border between new wave and minimal wave appears to be popularity and obscurity; Sudeten Creche belong to both camps
