The South American Women's Football Championship (Campeonato Sudamericano de Fútbol Femenino, shortened Sudamericano Femenino) is the main competition in women's association football between national teams of the CONMEBOL
.
It was first held in 1991. In the first two editions of the tournament only one team (the champion) qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup
. In the third edition the champions qualified automatically, while the runner-up of the tournament faced a team from the CONCACAF
in a play-off match to reach the World Cup. In the fourth edition two automatic spots were given for the 2003 World Cup: to the champions and the second placed team respectively, a situation remaining for the 2007 and 2011 edition.
There is also an Under 20
and Under 17
versions.
