First Lieutenant Subadar Subramanian was the first Indian to be awarded the George Cross
.
He served with the Queen Victoria’s Own Madras Sappers and Miners of the Indian Army during World War II and won the award for sacrificing his own life on 24 June 1944 by throwing himself over a mine to protect others from the blast. He was gazetted on 30 June 1944. He was also awarded the India Service Medal
