 Assembly in 1858, Mihailović was the leader of the Obrenović faction and led the delegation that demanded the abdication of Prince Alexander Karađorđević. After return of Miloš in 1858, he became president of the Council, while under Mihailo retired.

In 1875, and from 1876 until 1878, Mihailović becomes the Prime Minister. This second Mihailovic government leads country during Serbo-Turkish War of 1876–1878, and also lead to Serbia's territorial expansion and independence at Berlin Congress
