McIntyre ran for the post of Debian Project Leader in 2006 and 2007 but was defeated. During the 2006 term, he acted as "Second in charge" of the Debian Project. In 2008 he was elected the Debian Project Leader, and was re-elected in 2009. He chose not to run in the 2010 election; that election was won by Stefano Zacchiroli.
