Stephen McNeil is a Nova Scotian politician representing the riding of Annapolis
in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly
and is the leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party.
McNeil is the 12th of 17 siblings. His mother, Theresa McNeil, forced to work when his father died in 1973, was the first female sheriff
in Canada and is a recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia
. McNeil attended the Nova Scotia Community College
, and owned a small business for over 18 years.
McNeil first sought election in 1999
, but was defeated. He ran again in 2003
and is now serving his second term in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly
. He was re-elected in the 2009 election and upon commencement of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly will be the Leader of the Opposition, after helping the Liberals picking up 2 seats and become Nova Scotia's second party.
On January 30, 2007, McNeil announced he would run for leadership of the Liberal Party. He was endorsed by Leo Glavine
