Steel in Africa dates to prehistory, and continues to be manufactured presently in many countries. In 2009 Africa accounted for 1.3% of global steel production or 15.2 million metric tons. 2009 was the lowest steel production in Africa in 6 years, both in terms of absolute quantity and percentage of global production.
