History

The route was originally established in 1963 along the road now signed as S.R. 75 Alt, as an access road to the Richard Russell Scenic Byway (S.R. 348). In 1972, the current segment was added to the route. A few years later, the original segment was renumbered as S.R. 75 Alt to encourage its use as a bypass around the tourist traffic in Helen

Significance

Today, the route is an important connector for tourist traffic in the mountains. Route 356 is the principal access road to Unicoi State Park
