Currently, that section is being widened and a West Zephyrhills Bypass is being proposed between the intersection with CR 577 and the north end of merger of CR 54 and CR 579, which would be ideal for both a realignment and a revival of the state designation segment between US 301 in Zephyrhills
and US 98 in Polk County
. As of 2009, all segments east of SR 581 remain a two-lane undivided highway.

SR 54 is a six-lane divided highway from its western terminus at US 19, but narrows down to four lanes from Suncoast Parkway east of Odessa to US 41 in Land O' Lakes. In between County Roads 77 and 1 in Seven Springs, the road moves southeast along the Mitchell Bypass, which crosses over the Anclote RiverAnclote River
