In his college career, he recorded his first career INT vs. Chris Simms of University of Texas and started 5 games as a frosh. Started only 2 games his sophomore year before coming back to win the starting role as a junior. He led the team in INT's with 4 for 44 return yards and had a stellar game against Michigan in Ann Arbor. He played in 47 career games for the Cougars, starting 27. He recorded 136 career tackles (111 solos) with three stops for losses of 15 yards, seven interceptions for 96 yards in returns, 23 pass break-ups, a fumble recovery, a blocked kick and three kickoff returns for 36 yards. He more than held his own against several first round NFL draft picks and credible receiverss in today's game: Roddy White, UAB; Roy Williams, Texas; Mark Clayton, Oklahoma; Braylon Edwards, Michigan; Steve Breaston, Michigan. He was an All-Conference USA third-team choice as a senior in 2004 finishing with 2 INT'S and 63 tackles (the most of any collegiate CB.

For his first three years at the University of Houston, Routt split time between track and football. He earned NCAA Outdoor All-American honors after finishing third in the 200 meters at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Meet. In indoor track, he was named Conference USA's Men's 2004 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes and qualified to compete in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes at the NCAA Indoor Championship. He is a two-time winner in the 200 meters at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.College career
