The Academy had a new build budget of £38 million and was designed to be a state-of-the-art teaching centre with a focus on new innovative methods of teaching.

It is directly funded by the DCSF and receives additional support from its sponsors, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark and the De La Salle Congregation

The Academy is the first Roman Catholic all through Academys from Reception to Year 12 and is a specialist college in Business and Enterprise under the Specialist School's Trust.

The Principal of the Academy is Mrs. Monica Cross, with Vice Principal Mr. Michael Barry. Assistant Principals are Mr. David Cregan (Community and Primary), Mr. Nathan Mansfield (staffing and performance), Mr. Martin Nisimloo (Business and Enterprise), Mrs. Elaine Tasker (Inclusion) and Sean October (Student Services)

The Academy sadly lost one of its founding Senior team members in 2010 to illness - Edward Lucisano (Learning) - Eddie worked at both St Matthew Academy and St Joseph Academy and will always be missed and remembered by the Academy community.

St Matthew Academy has three Houses: Romero, Teresa and Mandela, named after Archbishop Oscar Romero

The Academy since opening has been responsible for a dramatic increase in results at GCSE. In 2010 results rose by 21% making the Academy the most improved school in Lewisham and South London.
