The school was founded by the inspirational John Mayor in 1965. His vision of a whole-person education based on Christian principles and outdoor education was way ahead of its time and, 40 years later, is a philosophy to which many other schools belatedly aspire. The school also supports children and young adults with learning difficulties and has a whole-school approach to dyslexia with considerable emphasis on developing individual talents .
