. The town was named for Springfield, Missouri
, the origin of early settlers to the town. According to the Plainsman Herald from March 1988, the town was settled in 1888 or 1889 by Frank Pierce Tipton (DPOB 10 Dec 1852, Gallopolis, Ohio) who had travelled to Springfield from Moulton, Iowa
, via Springfield, Missouri, in 1886 or 1887 in a covered wagon
. Frank Tipton secured the title to 80 acres (323,748.8 m²) which was the original town site. Springfield has one school district which is RE-4 . The Superintendent, and elementary principal is Mike Page, and the High School principal is Richard Hargrove. The town has one library.

There were 715 households out of which 23.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.8% were married couples
living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 38.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.80.
In the town the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $24,375, and the median income for a family was $34,107. Males had a median income of $25,385 versus $16,339 for females. The per capita income
