Spondyloarthropathy
Encyclopedia
Spondyloarthropathy is any joint disease of the vertebral column
Vertebral column
In human anatomy, the vertebral column is a column usually consisting of 24 articulating vertebrae, and 9 fused vertebrae in the sacrum and the coccyx. It is situated in the dorsal aspect of the torso, separated by intervertebral discs...

. Spondyloarthropathy with inflammation is called spondylarthritis. In contrast, spondylopathy is a disease of the vertebra itself, but many conditions involve both spondylopathy and spondyloarthropathy. In the broadest sense, the term spondyloarthropathy includes joint involvement of vertebral column from any type of joint disease, including rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks synovial joints. The process produces an inflammatory response of the synovium secondary to hyperplasia of synovial cells, excess synovial fluid, and the development...

Symptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes an effusion...

, but the term is often used for a specific group of disorders with certain common features, the group often being termed specifically seronegative spondylarthropathies:

Seronegative spondylarthropathy

Seronegative spondyloarthropathy (or seronegative spondyloarthritis) is a group of diseases involving the axial skeleton

The axial skeleton consists of the 80 bones along the central axis of the human body. It is composed of six parts; the human skull, the ossicles of the middle ear, the hyoid bone of the throat, the rib cage, sternum and the vertebral column...

"Seronegative" refers to the fact that these diseases are negative for rheumatoid factor
Rheumatoid factor
Rheumatoid factor is an autoantibody most relevant in rheumatoid arthritis. It is defined as an antibody against the Fc portion of IgG. RF and IgG join to form immune complexes that contribute to the disease process...

, indicating a different pathophysiological mechanism of disease than what is commonly seen in rheumatoid arthritis
