The novel takes place in the countryside of France, where Alleyn is vacationing with Agatha Troy, now his wife, and their son Ricky; it concerns an unusual and sinister plot which is perpetrated against traveling spinsters. The novel was published as The Bride of Death in the United States in 1955.
