Spencer High School is located at 4340 Victory Drive in Columbus
, Georgia
. It was established in 1930 by the Columbus Public Schools as the first black high school in Columbus, Georgia. The school was named in honor of Dr. William Henry Spencer
. It is the only high school in Columbus to have ever been at 3 locations.
The second Spencer High School was located at 1830 Shepherd Drive (now Marshall Middle School). In the late 1970s, the Muscogee County School Board voted to close Spencer High School and move the Spencer students to a new high school located at 4340 Victory Drive. The name of this new high school was to be the Southwest High School and its colors were to be blue and white.
To the rescue came a group of young men by the name of the Golden Owls. Their appearance before both the School Board and City Council convinced both not to eliminate the name of Spencer High School and its Green and Gold.
The new Spencer High School located at 4340 Victory Drive in a complex designed to accommodate about 1,000 students. The current enrollment at Spencer High is 1,762—approx 850 students over capacity. Fort Benning High School students also attend Spencer High, and about half of the students are military.
The mascot is the Greenwave, but the is used at events. The colors are green and Carver is the primary rival.
The school has been under the direction of Reginald Griffin for the past three years. The Assistant Principals include Miranda Banks, Marcus Zeld, and Michael Tucker.
The Guidance Department includes Dorothy Tatmon, Shantis Curry, Branden Hackney, and Sonja Parker.
Spencer is the only high school in Columbus with a public safety class and cosmetology class, under the directions of Marcus Seldon and Catherine Green.
Spencer High School offers a variety of extracurricular activities including: up and coeing football team, marching band, baseball, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, softball, volleyball, girls and boys soccer, golf, cross country, track, Drama Club, One Act Competition, DECA
, FBLA, and Peer Helpers.
The Greenwave Marching Band has been voted number one in the state of Georgia for the past 11 years as well as number 1 in the south and number 4 in the nation.
The Football team won their 2007 homecoming game, breaking a four year losing streak.
In 2010 the Boys Greenwave Basketball team made it to the elite 8 and lost to Greater Atlanta Christian

History
The first Spencer High School was built on 10th Avenue at 8th Street. This building remained until it was destroyed by fire. The building was the home of Marshall Junior High School until it burned. Spencer High School was relocated to 1830 Shepherd Drive in 1953.The second Spencer High School was located at 1830 Shepherd Drive (now Marshall Middle School).
