History

The plans for the construction of the hospital were started by the Strangers Charity, who founded the hospital in 1806. The present building was finally completed in 1852.

 the NHS was founded and the hospital was then handed over and managed by the NHS until its closure. During its time in the NHS the hospital was used to treat patients with acute medical conditions, spinal injuries and orthopedic injurys.
The hospital finally closed in 1990 and lay empty for many years. In 1988 shortly before closure, Princess Diana opened the new Southport District General Hospital and the spinal injuries unit moved from the promenade site to the Southport General Infirmary

where they remained until 1990 when the new extension at the rear of the new Southport District General Hospital was completed. The extension was built especially to house the spinal injuries unit.
