It was first published in August 1888 and celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2008. It is published from Monday to Saturday. There is one edition a day; Thursday and Saturday are Job days, where all local job vacancies can be advertised. The Echo is currently the only non-free local newspaper which covers the city of Southampton.

On Saturdays a publication called The Sports Pink is also sold. This is used for the reporting and discussion of sporting stories regularly involving local sports team Southampton Football Club. This is one of the few surviving 'pink papers' which used to be common throughout the UK.
