South NSW derby
Encyclopedia
The NSW derby involves two of the teams from NSW in the Australian A-League
, the Central Coast Mariners and Sydney FC
. The rivalry has developed due to the relatively short distance between the clubs as well as a number of notable games contested between the two.
The rivalry began when the two sides contested the final of the first ever competition of A-league clubs- the Oceania Club Championship, which Sydney won 1-0. The two went on to meet in the first ever A-League grand final, where Sydney again won 1-0. Other notable games include Sydney's 5-4 win over the Mariners- the most goals ever scored in an A-league game. There was also controversy in the 2010-11 season, when Mariners debutant Patricio Perez
came on, won and scored a penalty to secure a 1-1 draw, only to be suspended after the match for diving.
The fixture is also notable for its very high number of goals, with an average of over 3 goals per game, and its high number of penalties, with almost one every two games.
Noel Spencer
(Mariners to Sydney) has been contracted for both teams, but did not play for Sydney in the A-league, only in the 2007 AFC Champions League. Matthew Nash

(Mariners to Sydney) has signed for both clubs, but only made representative appearances for Sydney. Justin Pasfield
