South Middle School has received high rankings in state and national Science Olympiad

competitions since the early 1990s. Recently they placed 17th in the National Science Olympiad competition. In 2008, South placed first in the Illinois State Science Olympiad Tournament.

Athletics

In 1998, the Boys Cross Country Team finished 4th in state in the Boys AA division. The team was led by Ed Murry who earned All-State honors by finishing in 4th place. In 2000, the South Boys Cross Country team finished 3rd in the state, their best finish to date. This team was led by Eddie Barnes and Jason Cerman, both earning All-State honors by finishing 5th and 15th respectively in the State Meet. In 2005, the Boys team again finished 4th in the state, led by Joe Latulip finishing 4th individually in state.
The seventh girls volleyball team of 2010 won a tournament for their district. They beat their rivals, Thomas Middle School. 7th grade boys Cardinals had a very successful 2011 Track and Field year sending 6 students down to the state track meet in East Peoria, Illinois.
