It began life on 10th November 1978 as the Withington

 Reporter. In March 1980, the name was changed to The Reporter and again to the South Manchester Reporter in November 1988.

The most popular section in the paper is a rather quirky column written by James Chapman-Kelly. He never fails to entertain and has a good rapport with the readers as is evidenced by the number of letters and emails received. James Chapmn-Kelly also has a weekly column in the Manchester Evening News every Saturday entitled 'Rewind'. A look back at what made the news 100 years ago on a day by day basis. He has been writing the column for over six years and it is the most popular section in the Saturday paper.
