. The school was built in 1969 in order to integrate the area's "all-white" and "all-black" schools. As of the 2010/2011 school year it is currently in its 42nd year of operation. The principal is Eddie Price, a former principal of Clayton Middle School.

The school is located in the Southern portion of Johnston County. Middle schools that feed into South Johnston include Benson Middle, Four Oaks Middle, and Meadow School (K-8).

SJHS offers a variety of sports which includes: volleyball, football, cross country, wrestling, women's and men's tennis, women's and men's swim teams, softball, baseball, women's and men's soccer, golf, women's and men's indoor and outdoor track, cheerleading, and women's and men's basketball.
