Beacon Academy
Beacon Academy deals with teaching broadcasting and communication. Beacon stands for Broadcasting Education And Communication Networks. The Academy opened in Fall of 2008 with 50 students. A special feature that was recently established from the academy is the Beacon Broadcast. This 7 minute weekly segment features the work of academy students."Zero Hour"
South Elgin High School is currently enrolling hundreds more students than the actual building capacity. Due to the heavy foot traffic during passing periods, school administrators initiated the Zero Hour schedule to combat this issue beginning for the 2010-2011 school year. Zero Hour is only issued to students whose first class begins on the "000" mark on their schedules unlike the second start time of "001" which is for all other students. This unique time difference is the reason SEHS runs on a 16 period schedule and not the widely accepted 8 period schedule of most schools in the country. This caused controversy in the school and district since Zero Hour students would receive an extra 30 minutes of instructional time and would have a harder time attending morning clubs or receive extra help prior to the school day because their extra time is gained from their morning.Principals
Dr. Bowen was the first principal of South Elgin High School. The current principal is Mrs. Meidel.Site History
South Elgin High School was constructed on 76 acres of previous farmland. During the excavation process of construction, pottery from around 6000 to 4000 B.C. had been unearthed. The site has been identified as a pre-historic, American Indian settlement.Future Projects
The construction of the South Elgin High School football stadium began before the 2011-2012 school year. The expected cost is $3,205,084 for the 2,500 seat field which will be completed in a three step process. It had been decided that all money to build the school's stadium would be gathered through the "Bring It Home" fundraiser. The first game to be played in the new stadium was a soccer match in the fall of the 2011 school year, in which the Storm had won.Events
South Elgin High School had its first Cultural Show on Friday March 20, 2009. Named "Celebration of Nations," the show was sponsored by the school's SASA (South Asian Student Association), made up of Pakistani and Indian students, and OLAS (Organization of Latin American Students). The show featured many different performances including dances, singing and a fashion show. The "Celebration of Nations" show is still continued annually. Other popular events at the school are the annual car show and the Relay for Life walk which are usually done in the spring.STORM Fight Song
