The 700 class of locomotive were introduced in 1971 and all but one, 702 which was scrapped after a fire, remain in service. The class were built at A. E. Goodwin

(ARG). In 2006 following the sale of ARG the five remaining locomotives were transferred to Genesee and Wyoming Australia
for use on their South Australian leased network, and on interstate services.
