. The population was 1,295 at the 2000 census. A special census in 2008 set the population at 1,832.
The DeKalb County portion of Somonauk is part of the Chicago–Naperville
–Joliet
Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion that lies in LaSalle County is part of the Ottawa
–Streator
Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Between Somonauk and Sandwich, which lies to the east, resides the Sannauk Forest Preserve, which serves as the unofficial boundary between the neighboring communities. In the Forest Preserve is a marshy area that sits along Somonauk Creek, just before it crosses into LaSalle County, and also into Lake Holiday. The Lake Holiday area was built on reclaimed marsh which sat on the creek, and the creek was subsequently dammed to create the lake that is seen today.In lake holiday, there are many fish,some even records in Illinois. They are all different colors.

There were 500 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples
living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.16.
In the village the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The community also shares the area known as "Lake Holiday" with neighboring Sandwich, with Somonauk School District covering the west side of the lake, and Sandwich covering the east side of the area, along with the neighboring subdivisions of "Wildwood" and "Wildwood South".
