Social Sector In India

In the current Indian society we see that there is a growing realization that social sector is an inseparable element of any economy. In India social sector is not an new event. Attempts at creating an apt social sector is seen from the times of independence.
The need for a social sector in India prevails due to presence of social and economic inequalities. India is strongly divided between the “haves” and the “have-nots”. There is evident growth only for the minority and not for the masses.
Therefore in India the social sector mainly aims to improve the conditions of the weaker sections, the disadvantaged, the discriminated and the disabled.

Due to the vast population and its diversity the Indian government has established an extensive social welfare system under the social sector. It covers a wide span of sectors within the population such as SC, ST, women, and communities at large. Some measure taken to improve the quality of life of these disadvantages communities are :

1) Minimum needs program- that is to provide food, clothing, housing, education, drinking water, etc

2) Social security programs

3) Improvement programs for the physically challenged such as the blind deaf dumb etc and also for the mentally challenged.

4) Programs for women, mainly including family planning, maternity care, education etc

5) Rehabilitation programs for sex workers, convicts, addicts etc

6) Other programs are also available which provide necessary relief during natural disasters like earthquake, floods, tsunami etc

7) The welfare scheme also involves measures to increase social inclusivity by excluding various social evils like untouchability , women discrimination, child marriage, dowry etc

8) It also takes up steps to help those involved in child trafficking, alcoholism, sorcery, witchcraft, smoking etc

9) These schemes also aim to provide rehabilitation to socially vulnerable groups like migrated people, senior citizens, orphans, street children etc.
