Retailers are fast adopting technologies that enhance the productivity of store space and inventory. Some solutions include kiosks and self-checkout terminals, with RFID keeping track of all incoming and outgoing products. Smartstores technology offers consumers better information about products and more control over the shopping process.

Smartstores enable retailers to recognize customers and immediately cater to their individual needs. Just as online stores such as Amazon give recommendations based on past purchases, brick-and-mortar smartstores provide similar functionality.

Famous smartstores today include Metro Group Future Store and BGN (Boekhandels Groep Nederland).
