Skjold is a former municipality in Rogaland
county, Norway.
It was created as Skjold formannskapsdistrikt
in 1837. The district Tysvær
was separated from Skjold in 1849 to constitute a municipality of its own, and the same thing happened to Vats
in 1891. The divisions left Skjold with a population of 1.961.
On 1 January 1964 the districts of Liarheim and Langeland with 1.262 inhabitants were merged with Sandeid
and parts of Imsland
and Vats to create the new municipality Vindafjord
. The districts Dueland, Grinde
and Yrkje, with 1.133 inhabitants, were reunited with Tysvær. At the same time an uninhabited part of Skjold was moved to Sveio
municipality in Hordaland
.
The village Skjold is presently located in Vindafjord, in the end of the Skjoldafjord inlet.
