Early Life and Career

Simon Kirby was born in Hastings, East Sussex in 1964. He attended Chantry Infants School, Sandown Primary School and Hastings Grammar School. He has a BSc(Hons) degree in Mathematical Modelling from the Open University and studied Operational Research at the London School of Economics.

Kirby established a number of successful businesses in various industries across Brighton. He was instrumental in establishing Surf 107, Brighton

), as well as the Webb Kirby (later C-Side) pub, restaurant and nightclub chain in the city, founded together with Brighton businessman Martin Webb

He has been a school governor at a number of schools during the past 20 years.

Political career

Kirby was an elected councillor at various times from 1992 on Brighton and Hove City Council, Mid Sussex District Council and East Sussex County Council, where he was cabinet member with responsibility for Economic Development.

He stood down as a Cabinet member on East Sussex County Council in 2009 to concentrate full time on winning back the parliamentary seat in Brighton Kemptown. He was elected to the House of Commons as MP for Brighton, Kemptown in the May 2010 general election, with a majority of 1,328, gaining the seat from Labour

He delivered his maiden speech in the House of Commons on 3 June 2010, in which he paid tribute to his predecessors and spoke of his pride in representing the exciting and diverse constituency of Brighton Kemptown.

Since his election Simon Kirby has been elected to both the Business, Innovation and Skills and Environmental Audit Select Committees. He is also Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on HIV/AIDS.

Since becoming a Member of Parliament he has also taken on responsibility as patron of the Sussex Beacon, the Sussex ME society.

Personal life

Simon is married to Elizabeth and has six children. He has lived for nearly all of his life in the Sussex area. Simon has been a lifelong supporter of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and still finds time to watch them occasionally. He is a director of Whitehawk Football Club in the constituency.
