. It was a poor first season for him, finishing down in twenty-second place with just nine points. For 1996 he was replaced in the team by 1992 champion Tim Harvey
. Without a drive, he spent most of his time in the following years as a test driver. In 1999 he returned to the National Saloon Championship, again winning the title, this time with a Honda Integra
Type R.
In 2000 he returned to the BTCC, driving in the new class B in a Ford Focus for GR Motorsport. He only drove in two rounds that year but this led to a full time drive in 2001 with a HTML ran Peugeot 306
in what was now named the production class. His four class wins early in the season helped him to win the production class title narrowly ahead of James Kaye by seven points.

in a Honda Civic

Racing career
After starting in karts and winning the 1985 Golden Steering Wheel Award, his first serious racing was in the Formula First Championship, ending the season third on points. In 1991 he raced in the British Formula Ford Championship, and finished the season third in the 1993 Formula Vauxhall Junior Series. In 1994 he switched to saloon cars, dominating and winning the 1994 National Saloon Championship in a Honda CivicHonda Civic
